Why a Gambrel Costs More Per Square Foot of Footprint
A gambrel roof costs roughly 10% to 20% more than a gable roof built over the same footprint, and the reason is not mysterious: there is more roof to build, and more of it is joinery.
Start with surface. A gambrel breaks each side into two slopes instead of one, and that break adds length rather than removing it — a 24 ft span at a 60° lower pitch carries about 18.2 ft of sloped length per side, against roughly 13.4 ft for a typical 6:12 gable covering the same 24 ft span. Sheathing, underlay and cladding all price by that sloped length, not by the footprint underneath it, which is exactly what the roof area calculator is built to total up for any span and pitch you give it.
Then add labor. A gable rafter is one member, one bearing point at the wall, one at the ridge, no joint in between. A gambrel rafter is two members meeting at a knuckle that carries a real change in direction — every truss needs a second cut, a gusset plate or steel connector on each face, and usually a collar tie bolted through below it. None of that shows up in a square-foot material takeoff, but all of it shows up in the labor line, which is why the installed cost gap tends to run wider than the raw area gap alone would suggest.
None of that means a gambrel is a bad deal — it means the comparison has to be made against the right footprint. A gambrel that is 15% more expensive than a gable of the same footprint is also, in the same breath, delivering a finished loft that footprint-matched gable does not have at all. Metal panel roughly doubles the material rate over asphalt and adds a smaller premium to labor, which is why the total-cost gap between the two tiers is wider than the material-rate gap alone. Shingle quantities and metal panel quantities turn the same 1,455.2 ft² into actual bundle and panel counts once you have picked a tier.

The homepage's cost claim in one line: a gambrel costs more per square foot of footprint, but often less per square foot of finished space, because it adds usable floor area without adding foundation or wall height. Here is that claim worked through on the same 24 × 36 ft, 60°/15° example as above.

Same roof, same total bill — the only thing that changed is what you are dividing it by. A footprint-only comparison makes every gambrel look like the more expensive option; a finished-space comparison usually reverses that once the loft is counted as real floor area.

What This Estimate Does Not Cover
Every figure on this page is a design aid, not stamped engineering, and it is worth being specific about what it leaves out rather than letting that stay vague.
It prices roofing material and roofing labor only — the shingles or panels, underlay, fasteners and the crew that installs them. It does not price the trusses or rafters themselves, framing lumber, the knuckle's gusset plates or steel connectors, permits, inspections, scaffolding or lift rental, tear-off and disposal of an existing roof, or any structural engineering sign-off a jurisdiction requires for a gambrel's knuckle connection. Several of those — especially truss fabrication and tear-off — can be larger line items than the roofing itself on a real job.
It also assumes the $/sq ft rates you enter are already regionally and seasonally accurate, which this calculator has no way to verify. Labor rates in particular vary far more by market and by roof access than material rates do — a steep, hard-to-stage gambrel lower slope can push labor well past the starting range shown here. Use the numbers to compare options against each other — bigger against smaller, asphalt against metal, footprint cost against finished-space cost — and get an actual written quote before treating any total as a budget.

How much does it cost to build a gambrel roof?

Is a gambrel roof cheaper than a gable roof overall?
Per square foot of roof footprint, no — a gambrel costs more, because it has one extra rafter cut per side and a knuckle joint to detail with gussets or plates. Per square foot of finished space, often yes, because the gambrel is delivering a usable loft the gable is not.
On a 24 × 36 ft example at the asphalt tier used on this page, total cost per square foot of footprint runs $11.79–$20.21, but counted against the footprint plus the 614.6 ft² of loft floor the same roof creates, it drops to roughly $6.89–$11.81 per square foot of finished space. Which number matters depends on whether you are pricing a roof or pricing a building.
What is the cheapest roofing material for a gambrel roof?
Asphalt shingle is normally the lower-cost tier, and metal panel the higher one, both in material and in labor. The calculator above defaults to $4–$7/sq ft material and $3–$5/sq ft labor for asphalt against $7–$12/sq ft material and $4–$6/sq ft labor for metal — starting ranges only, meant to be overwritten with a real local number.
Material choice does not change the roof area or the rafter lengths at all — it only changes what you multiply that area by. Shingle quantities and metal panel quantities break the same area down into actual bundle and panel counts once you have picked a material.
Does a gambrel roof need special trusses that cost more to install?
Yes — a gambrel truss has a knuckle joint a gable truss does not, and that joint needs gusset plates or steel connectors plus a collar tie, which adds material and labor a single-slope truss never sees. That extra detailing is part of why the sheathed-area cost difference between a gambrel and a gable understates the full installed-cost gap.
